Lambayeque: blueberries and avocados are consolidated as the main export products

A report prepared by the Peruvian Foreign Trade Society (ComexPerĂș) details that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lambayeque consolidated the blueberries and avocados fresh or dried as the main export products. The high demand for these fruits in the United States and European countries diminished, in part, the impact of the economic crisis in this northern region.

According to ComexPerĂș, Lambayeque exports reached 718 million dollars at the end of 2020, which represented a 8.3% increase over the previous year (USD 663 million). The products that were most sent abroad were blueberries or blackberries (27%), fresh or dried avocados (17.5%), non-decaffeinated coffees (8%) and fresh grapes (8%).

The main destinations of Lambayecan exports in 2020 were USA, with 34.5% of the total; The Netherlands, with 21%; and the United Kingdom, with 8.7%. Other countries that also had a relevant participation in the export basket of this region last year were Germany, Ecuador, Spain, Belgium, China, among other nations.

ComexPerĂș explains that with this result, shipments abroad in the region maintained their upward path, after they had an average annual growth of 12.3% in the period 2001-2019. The behavior of 2020 was mainly explained by the performance of non-traditional exports, which totaled approximately 90% of shipments from Lambayeque.

Economic sectors

At another time, this institution stated that in 2020 the commerce sector was ranked as the most important economic activity in Lambayeque, with a participation of the 17%. This is followed by agriculture, livestock, hunting and forestry, with 10.7%. The agricultural and fishing sector was the largest generator of employment last year, adding 143,880 jobs.
