The head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), Edward Gonzalez, reported this Saturday, January 22, that the Government of Spain has already intervened in the case of the oil spill in the sea of Window, a disaster caused on January 15 and for which the Repsol company claims not to be responsible.
“The sea current indicates that it is going north, but that is really unpredictable. We have to demand that the authorities, such as the Repsol businessmen and the Government of Spain, because they have already begun to carve out this case, put all their experience into this thing in order to correct it,” he said during his participation before the Andean Peoples Commission. and Special Commission on Climate Change of Congress.
Along the same lines, the official announced that a mission of Spanish specialists would arrive the following week “to support and advise on the subject.”
Regarding the environmental damage caused by the oil spill, González clarified that it is a matter of the OEFA.
“We do not intervene in that part either because we are a regulatory entity. It’s not that we’re taking action, we have to be vigilant and start working on supervision, support everything from our sector to remedy this catastrophe,” he said.
The minister also specified that the cleaning work of the affected beaches is a team effort. “Let’s stop blaming each other that we have to work and after remedying it, we will only see the total responsibilities. We need to see the time needed to assess the damage. We have to see how to commit from State to State so that Spain endorses your company”, he explained.
Likewise, he highlighted the need to declare a state of emergency due to the consequences it will leave on the economy and the population of the northern coastal area.
“I believe that the emergency declaration of the entire Peruvian coast is necessary because this is a problem that has left us without a summer in the north. There will be no bathers, no trade, no tourism. Everyone will be harmed. It is not only the ecological damage, but also the population”, he concluded.
