Petroperú before 300 barrels of oil spilled in Loreto: “The impact is minimal”

Last Thursday, January 20, a new oil spill occurred in the Amazon. The leak occurred at kilometer 59 of Section I of the Norperuano Pipeline, operated by Petroperú. A representative of the state company maintained that they were between 200 and 300 barrels of crude oil spilled in the Urarinas district (Loreto region).

“We estimate between 200 to 300 barrels that are contents in the flotation channel, which is what we hope to recover”, assured Óscar Vera, corporate operations manager of Petroperú. According to the official, this incident will not cause environmental damage.

The impact (to the ecosystem) is minimal. The crude is inside the channel”, Vera declared in an interview with Canal N. “Normally, in almost all the spills that have occurred, the crude oil is contained in the flotation channels. As it rains, in fact it can spread later”, added the representative of Petroperú.

In a statement, the hydrocarbons company assured that it was a intentional cut in the duct. “Unfortunately, in the last three years, most of the spills caused in the pipeline have been caused by these malicious people,” Vera explained.

On the morning of this Friday, January 21, journalist Barbara Fraser explained that the spill was first noticed by community members from Nueva Alianza, a town located in Bajo Marañón. The first versions pointed out that it would be vandalism, so the locals waited for the action of the authorities and Petroperú.

Between the years 2000 and 2019 there were 474 spills of this substance in the Amazon, according to the publication The Shadow of Petroleum, which collected information from the Supervisory Body for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin) and the Environmental Assessment and Control Body (OEFA).
