The managing director of Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), Kristalina Georgieva, indicated that they will revise upwards the losses that COVID-19 will cause to the world economy until 2024 due to the impact of the omicron variant.
“The world economy will lose between now and 2024 US$12.5 trillion, and we are going to revise that figure upwards due to the impact of omicron,” Georgieva said.
Regarding the lack of access to vaccines against COVID-19 in poor countries, especially on the African continent, Georgieva recalled that, at the end of 2021, 86 countries had not reached the minimum goal of having 40% of the population vaccinated.
“This dangerous divergence (between rich and poor countries) will have consequences for those states due to the increase in poverty, but also for global security because it will increase protests, tensions and insecurity,” he reported.

Georgieva explained that if 2020 was the year of the discovery of the vaccine and 2021 the year of production, 2022 has to be the year of mass vaccine delivery, and that only this will improve the prospects for the global economy.
The managing director of the IMF also referred to the different impact that the pandemic has had on children’s education depending on where they lived, since while residents of rich countries began to study from home, residents of poor countries “completely abandoned education.”
She stated that this would have serious consequences for the productivity of these countries in the future and was also concerned that while “children may go back to school” in the future, “Girls may not do it.”
