Pedro Castillo at Davos 2022: “The unity of the peoples of Latin America is a priority”

Since Davos 2022, the president peter castle He explained that overcoming the crisis caused by COVID-19, sustainable and inclusive economic recovery, and the promotion of private investment are the three pillars of his management to reactivate the economy and overcome the pandemic in its third year of scourge.

During the virtual plenary session of Heads of State of Latin America, organized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) from the city of Davos, Switzerland, Castillo stated that his government allocated a figure of more than one billion US dollars for the acquisition of vaccinations and control of contagion levels.

“For several years now, the economic process in our region has gradually stalled, and inequalities have worsened with the pandemic. Therefore, the unity of the peoples of Latin America is a priority. Not only considering economic growth, but also the design of social policies, particularly in terms of health and education, as well as the generation of employment in compliance with the objectives of sustainable development”, he stressed.

In this sense, he said that more than 80% of the adult population in Peru was vaccinated with two doses, affirmed that the strong impulse of investment and public spending have been contributing to the economic reactivation, with a GDP that would have registered a growth of 13% in 2021, and the creation of 340,000 formal jobs between last July and October.

The Peruvian head of state agreed with the WEF that the market requires a State committed to carrying out reforms to achieve sustainable development, and that, for its part, the State requires private companies that promote productive diversity, invest in their employees, treat suppliers fairly, support the surrounding communities, and protect the environment.

Castle in Davos 2022: historical debts

President Pedro Castillo also commented that his government is carrying out reforms to address historical debts pending between the Peruvian State and its population: the strengthening of the first level of health care, the financing of a quality educational service, and the comprehensive solution of conflicts through the social dialogue with the participation of all stakeholders.

The president described private investment as “the engine of social welfare”, and invited national and foreign businessmen to invest in Peru, reaffirming his government’s commitment to responsible management of the economy, guaranteeing legal stability and clear rules.

“For an agenda to 2030, we must bet on the integration, cooperation and solidarity in Latin America in areas such as food security, universal access and education, as well as attracting investment (…) Our government is convinced that the integration of region is beyond ideological and political differences. There is much more that unites us than what separates us. Together, yes we can”, said the dignitary.

Finally, he called on his Latin American peers so that, beyond ideological and political differences, they bet together for integration, cooperation and solidarity in Latin America.

In detail, the areas indicated by the Peruvian president are food security, universal access to health and education, the attraction of investments, access to international financing, the fight against terrorism, organized crime, corruption, the protection of human rights, the freedoms of all people, gender equality, and respect for indigenous peoples.
