Mining activity in the north of the country generated S/ 671 million during 2021

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported that the transfer of resources generated by mining activity to the regional and local governments of the North macro-region, which include the mining canon, legal and contractual royalties, and right of validity and penalty, added more than S/ 671 million between January and December 2021, according to the latest edition of the Mining Statistics Bulletin.

“These resources, which are used by the governments that make up the North macro-region (Cajamarca, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes), contribute significantly to the continuity of productive activities in the regions and the fight against the pandemic of COVID-19. COVID-19, among other aspects,” said the Minem.

In detail, for these regions in the north of the country, transfers by canon in 2021 reached a figure greater than S/ 454 million. Meanwhile, for the concept of legal and contractual mining royalties, they added more than S/ 168 million, a situation encouraged by the high prices of metals and the greater production.

While, for the right of validity and penalty, these regions received an amount that exceeds S / 48 million.

Among the regions that make up the North macro-region that received the most resources, Cajamarca ranked first with more than S/ 360 million, followed by La Libertad with more than S/ 289 million.

The Minem pointed out that the resources generated by the mining activity constitute an important source of financing for subnational governments, since it allows them to execute public projects with the purpose of improving the living conditions of their citizens and, especially, of the nearby communities. to these.

The North macro-region presented a portfolio of eight mine construction projects with a joint investment of US$ 22,231 million, which represents 41.8% of the national total.
