Peru imported 78,000 tons of powdered milk in 2021

The National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) reported that Peru imported 78,000 tons of powdered dairy inputs (powdered milk, anhydrous fat, whey and whey) in 2021, which represented an increase of 14.7% compared to the 68,000 tons imported in 2020.

He also highlighted that said volume represents a record in the import of powdered dairy supplies by Peru.

However, the National Convention of Peruvian Agro (Conveagro) indicated that the average price of powdered milk reached S/ 2 per liter, when the Peruvian producer is only paid S/ 1.06 per liter.

In addition, they reported that in 2021 there was the worst crisis for cattle families in the country (due to the increase in the price of cattle feed and the low price that the industry pays farmers for milk).

“This historical record of imports is detrimental to more than 450,000 families of Peruvian dairy farmers. Only in Peru, the producer is destroyed and the authorities do nothing”, they said.

They indicated that they are more than 30,000 farming families those that are closing their stables, which “will generate the loss of more than 120,000 jobs.”

“Let’s give medals to these indolent companies with the producers of Peru, supported by authorities that do nothing to correct so much abuse of industrial monopsony,” concluded Conveagro.
