Petroperú: New Talara Refinery begins operations in April

Petroperú reported that the operations of the New Talara Refinery will be carried out gradually starting next April.

In a dialogue with Andina, the manager of the Purchasing Department of Petróleos del Perú (Petroperú), Roger Lyi, announced that the new refinery is ready and will be “very competitive in terms of design and products”, which will reduce the cost of fuels in the local market.

“It is definitely an important milestone for our country to have a refinery with this level of specialization. In addition, the Peruvian law on this issue is changing, because starting next July we will only have two fuels, regular and premium, and that is a big change,” he said.

In this sense, the representative of the state oil company indicated that having only two gasolines will allow optimizing those bottlenecks, such as congestion in maritime terminals.

“Let’s remember that dropping four products is very different from dropping two,” Lyi said.

The new plant, whose construction is carried out with funds from Petroperú, has a refining capacity of 95,000 barrels of oil per day. The start of operations will be gradual, with the development of the 16 processing units of this new refining complex.

“We have to go slowly to settle the machines and, as it progresses, the refinery will pick up speed until it reaches its optimum level of operations,” Lyi assured.
