EHNE urges to focus on the ownership of agricultural and livestock farms and sustainability

The agrarian union maintains that the debate over the demonstrations of Minister Alberto Garzón “has been quite interested, with no room for clarification and seeking an easy sentence and an attack on the political adversary, using in this case the primary sector.”

The EHNE union has urged to focus on “the ownership of agricultural and livestock farms, insisting on the importance of economic and social sustainability “.

In a statement, he maintains that the debate over the demonstrations of Minister Alberto Garzón “has been quite interested, without space to make qualifications and seeking an easy sentence and an attack on the political adversary, using in this case the primary sector.”

At the same time, he points out that when talking about sustainability, it must be done in environmental terms, but also in social and economic terms, and in that sense, he indicates that “saying that extensive livestock should be promoted as opposed to intensive livestock does not cease to be a headline with which we can more or less agree “.

The EHNE union has assured that “the production model is important and, facing the future of the primary sector, the environmental care it must be a fundamental objective “, after which it indicates that for the union”the real focus of the debate must be placed on the ownership of the farms agriculture and livestock, insisting on the importance of economic and social sustainability“.

In this sense, he states that “we are witnessing the phenomenon that, both globally and locally, large investment funds they are taking over livestock and agricultural production“.

In this context, “the great challenge we face” is whether you want a primary sector in the hands of large companies with their workers or a primary sector made up of farmers and ranchers who live in the villages managing their exploitation“.

In this sense, limiting the size of farms legally, as has been tried in Navarra and in other communities, “is essential.” “Macro farms such as the one installed in Caparroso, with their economies of scale, compete with the rest of the sector, but at the same time they are treated, at the aid level, like any exploitation” he warns to conclude by commenting that “the most negative of the statements of the Minister Garzón is the bad image that is projected on meat in general, something that affects the entire meat sector “.
