More than S / 2,859 million will be invested in improving drinking water and sewerage services

During 2021, the National Superintendency of Sanitation Services (Sunass) approved nine rate studies aimed at improving drinking water and sewerage services, through investments amounting to S / 2,859 million 300,000 that will benefit more than 14 million people.

Of the 9 rate studies approved last year, 8 (Sedapar in Arequipa, EPS Moyobamba in San Martín, Emusap in Amazonas, EPS Grau in Piura, Sedalib in La Libertad, Sedapal in Lima and Callao, Emsapa Yauli La Oroya in Junín, Seda Ayacucho, in Ayacucho) correspond to the establishment of investments, management goals and rate structure to be applied in the next five years.

Thus, during that period will invest in closing gaps in water and sanitation; In other words, it will seek to reduce the number of families that still do not have access to this service. The planned investments will allow the execution of projects for the expansion, rehabilitation and improvement of drinking water and sewerage networks, the installation and renewal of meters, disaster risk management and the care and conservation of water sources through the Mechanisms of Remuneration for Ecosystem Services (Merese), among others.

The remaining rate study corresponds to the incremental rate of the water and sanitation service for the incorporation of the operation and maintenance costs of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the EPS Empssapal de Sicuani (Cusco), for the remainder of the regulatory period 2017-2022. The maintenance of the WWTP will contribute to the conservation of the environment and it will avoid the contamination of the Vilcanota river, preserving its ecosystem and the activities around it. In addition, it will help protect the health of the population and improve their quality of life.

It is important to note that all the drinking water rates approved in 2021 protect the most vulnerable families, through the targeted cross subsidy (SCF), which establishes that domestic users in poverty or extreme poverty pay a lower rate, according to their economic conditions.

Thus, with these eight tariff structures approved last year, to date there are 24 companies, of the 50 that exist in the country, that apply the SCF that benefits approximately 4 million people.

Sunass’s goal is to include this subsidy in all lending companies in Peru. To achieve this objective, in 2022 it is projected to approve between 10 to 12 new tariff studies, which, in addition, will contribute to continue reducing the gap of studies that have already completed their regulatory period.
