President Pedro Castillo participated in the launch ceremony of the first commercial fast-charging electric vehicle station in Peru, located at the Kio service station, at kilometer 25.62 of the Panamericana Sur highway, in the district of Lurín.
This initiative promotes the change in transportation, savings in carbon emissions and the increase in the demand for renewable energies in the country, with which it will be possible to take advantage of the wide potential for generating clean energy that exists in Peru to achieve carbon neutrality. to 2050.
This fast-charging electric station is capable of charging up to two vehicles at the same time, with deliveries of between 50 kW and 100 kW of power, and is the product of an alliance between Petroperú, the Enel group and Kio Networks.
During the presentation, President Pedro Castillo remarked that this station will be the first of many along the Panamericana Sur highway, on the goal of modernizing Peru’s energy matrix, along with other measures such as the massification of gas and the return of Petroperú to the exploitation of crude oil.
“This is the first of many that will be implemented along the South Pan-American Highway, encouraging the use of friendly energy and expanding its coverage. In this way we will advance in the change of the energy matrix ”, said the head of state.
In this sense, Castillo assured that the start-up of the first fast-charging electric station represents “another important step in the objective of generating modernization projects in favor of the country,” as is the new Talara refinery, “which will generate fuels. cleaner and of better quality ”.
“The return of Petroperú to oil and gas activities, after 25 years, with the operation of Lot I of the Talara basin and, soon, with lots 192 and 64, in Loreto, will allow us to produce fuels with low content sulfur. This will have a significant impact on sales prices for the national market, even in the most remote areas, “said the president.
“2022 is a year where we will work to improve the quality of life of people, especially the poorest, who need clean fuels, as well as gas with fair prices,” he added.
What is an electric station?
According to Enel, a charging station or electric station dispenses energy to recharge the batteries of electric cars in a similar way to how gas stations work. By their nature they can be semi-fast and fast (they can take 25 to 90 minutes to charge the entire battery) or slow (3 to 4 hours for 100% charge)
Due to the way charging stations work, their infrastructure does not take up too much space, so it is usual for them to be located in malls, offices, parks, municipalities, and other public spaces.
In 2011, Chile became the first country in Latin America to install an electric station. It was followed by other countries such as Brazil and Colombia, which only in 2020 registered 19,745 and 6,200 units of electrified vehicles (hybrids and electric) sold, respectively. Peru closed that year with 579 units sold and, in 2021, with 1,455.
