First day of strike at the Sidenor plant in Basauri

The Basque steelmaker Sidenor will stop production from its main plant in Basauri for 20 days until the end of the year. The management has justified the measure by increasing the cost of electricity.

The Basque steel company Sidenor will make its first stop of the 20 announced until the end of the year at the Basauri plant. The management has justified the measure to the increase in electricity prices, but the works council has asked the company for explanations and figures.

From today at noon to Friday morning the activity will stop in the steelworks department. It will not be the only unemployment of the week, since rolling mill it will Friday and Saturday. The measure affects 40 workers per shift.

Sidenor says that electricity costs have quadrupled in the last year from 60 euros per megawatt hour to 260 euros.

Although production will continue at the Sidenor factories in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Azkoitia, they will also be affected by the stoppages in Basauri from where they receive supplies. Thus, the company does not rule out stoppages at these plants as well.
