Francke: file for the expansion of the port of Ilo will be worked on in the coming months

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Pedro FranckeHe assured that the technical file for the modernization of the Port of Ilo, in Moquegua, will be worked on in the coming months, with special emphasis on expanding its shipping capacity.

During the decentralized Council of Ministers in Moquegua, the head of the MEF explained the possibility of expanding said terminal to increase the transport of inputs and minerals from the neighboring country of Bolivia.

“There is a technical file in the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) that is under final review. It is an approach to substantially improve the port of Ilo with a higher expansion. It is something that, in reality, as a cabinet we have talked with the president of Bolivia, who has raised his interest in this port being expanded to have a greater movement of cargo, “he said.

In this sense, Francke Ballvé assured that the file for said project is in the MTC, so it would be confirmed in the coming months.

“It has been reported, at the cabinet level, that the port of Ilo is already having a greater movement. There is a potentiality. The MTC will be working not only on a medium-scale improvement, but on a larger port in the future. This is a project whose file will be worked on in the coming months, ”the minister specified.

As recalled, the expected Quellaveco mining project, located in Moquegua, will start operations in 2022. However, to transport more than one million metric tons of copper per year, it will use the private port of Engie Peru, formerly Enersur. Even the MTC is promoting the modernization of this terminal.
