In November 2021, direct employment in the mining sector reached a new record high with a total of 246,641 workers, according to the Mining Statistical Bulletin (WELL) of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).
This figure is higher than that registered last October, when 241,316 workers were reported. According to the newsletter, November’s result is 23.3% higher than that obtained in the same month of 2020 and 2.2% as of October 2021.
Meanwhile, the average employment generated by mining between January and November 2021 reached 226,025 workers, which represents a growth of 27.2% compared to the annual average of 2020.
If we break down the data, Ancash it remains the region that concentrates the largest number of direct jobs in mining with 32,735 workers, who represent 13.3% of the total.
Arequipa follows with a total of 30,279 jobs, equivalent to 12.3% of the total, while Moquegua is in third place with 29,219 workers, that reflect 11.8% of the November result.
The highest figures for mining employment registered in November correspond to the companies Compañía Minera Antamina, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde and Anglo American Quellaveco, respectively.
Minem pointed out that mining employment has a great impact on the economy due to the better remuneration it provides, compared to other activities, and because it encourages the creation of formal jobs in the remote locations where the projects and operations are located.
