National railway infrastructure passed into the hands of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works

The State portfolio reported that, simultaneously, the transfer of assets, liabilities and litigious rights is progressing, which is equivalent to the remaining 30% of the company

The Minister of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) received, officially, the national railway infrastructure.

At the Chimbacalle station, located in the south of Quito, the holder of the portfolio, Marcelo Cabrera, and the liquidator of the company Ferrocarriles, Paulina Escudero, signed the deed for the transfer of national rail infrastructure to the MTOP.

The movable and immovable property that now pass into the hands of the Ministry correspond 70% of the company in liquidation, reported the entity.

Simultaneously, indicated the MTOP, progress is made with the transfer of assets, liabilities and litigious rights, which is equivalent to the remaining 30% of the company, with the aim of signing the final public deed, a document with which Ferrocarriles del Ecuador is extinguished.

Minister Marcelo Cabrera He said that with this step it is possible to move towards the beginning of the planning and structuring phase of the delegation process for the reactivation of the train through a concession or public-private alliance (PPP). The estimated investment to reactivate the railway amounts to $ 2,500 million.

“We are committed to establishing the best strategies for a comprehensive rehabilitation focused not only on the transport of tourists, but also of people and cargo, through the 965.6 kilometers of existing rail line,” he added.

The comprehensive rehabilitation of the train will allow, among other objectives, the promotion of agricultural production in the central Sierra of the country, connecting tourist areas of the Coast and the mountains, contributing to inter- and intra-provincial passenger transport. In addition, it has been proposed to move towards the decarbonization of the transport system, aligning the country with the commitments acquired internationally towards climate change and sustainable mobility.

Cabrera made a call to the GAD of the country through which the rail line crosses so that, together, the necessary maintenance of the train is given. Further, urged citizens to protect railways, trains, locomotives and wagons.

The liquidator Paulina Escudero, for her part, thanked her work team because, despite the difficulties, they provide their support so that the transfer of the train becomes a reality for the benefit of Ecuadorians.

The head of the MTOP, finally, pointed out that, in addition to the administration of the aforementioned railway infrastructure, the commitment to solve the problems that arise during the transfer process is maintained. “For us the human side is paramount. Rest assured that we will look after the interests of the workers and, above all, that of the retirees ”, stressed Cabrera. (I)
