Executive Branch evaluates proposing changes to the Mining Law

The president of the Council of Ministers, Mirtha Vásquez, reported yesterday that they will propose to the National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE) a series of changes in the General Mining Law to solve conflicts related to extractive activity.

“We have frankly told the SNMPE that we would like to propose a series of changes (to the Mining Law) to address the conflicts in the country, ”he said.

In dialogue with Ideeleradio, he stressed that “a scenario of tranquility” is needed for companies to invest in the country.

“Since the (tax) change to the Mining Law has been frustrated, we must at least advance in some adjustments,” he added.

In addition, he emphasized that certain regulations date from 1990 and need to be changed.

Along these lines, the Prime Minister also pointed out that since Executive They are working on “substantive measures” to prevent and solve the more than 200 existing social conflicts. In addition, he stressed that these are based on structural problems.

Consulted by La República, Pablo de la Flor, executive director of the SNMPE, said that the change in the regulations would not resolve the mining conflicts. However, he agreed with Vásquez on the origin of these problems.

“In our understanding, requires a sustained effort on the part of the State to solve structural problems that are related to the State’s lack of capacity to execute projects that are already financed by canon resources ”, de la Flor commented.
