Producers expect positive results from the V National Agricultural Census

After the owner of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Víctor Maita, announced the execution of the V National Agricultural Census (Cenagro) in the first quarter of this year 2022, the spokespersons of the National Convention of Peruvian Agro (Conveagro) and that of the National Coffee Board reported that they expect positive results from this record.

“Is a timely measure that we have requested the unions from Conveagro to Minister Maita at the beginning of his administration. It (the census) is needed to be able to make decisions and generate correct attention, with a better quality of spending, “said the president of Conveagro, Clímaco Cárdenas.

In addition, it indicated that the census book should be worked out with the producers so that useful information on the situation of farmers can be collected. “We must take advantage of asking valuable information: the level of access to markets, electricity, basic service systems,” he said.

For his part, the manager of the National Coffee Board, Lorenzo Castillo, stated that It is required to know the methodology of the information with which the census is going to be carried out., to avoid making the mistakes of the last census carried out in 2012, during the administration of former president Ollanta Humala, in which the information collected was limited.

“It is a measure that will provide updated information on agricultural and livestock activity. What we do not know is the level of methodological validation to be implemented in this census. We must avoid the mistakes that were made in 2012 ″, he remarked.

An opportunity for agriculture

The president of Conveagro also advised that this census should have “georeferencing” in order to locate by coordinates to the different producers of family agriculture.

“It is necessary to have an intelligent agriculture where the State can know the coordinates of the men and women of the field. (…) From there, we can locate and insert them in international markets with the differentiated products that agriculture has, ”said Cárdenas.

Likewise, he argued that so far they do not have clear information about what the Second Agrarian Reform will include, so the V National Agricultural Census is important for make decisions regarding public policies that benefit agricultural producers.
