Chachapoyas, Huaraz and Puerto Maldonado were the cities with the highest inflation in 2021

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported that inflation or Consumer Price Index (CPI) to Nacional level in the year 2021 it grew 6,99%.

It should be remembered that the CPI measures the continuous increase and generalized of product prices from one period of time to another. In that sense, the INEI reported that the cities of Peru that had a greater increase in their prices were Chachapoyas with 12.52%, Huaraz with 11.97% and Puerto Maldonado with 11.16%

Evolution of the CPI in the main cities

The cities of the country that presented inflation greater than 10% They were six. In the north, Chachapoyas (12.52%), Huaraz (11.97%), Chiclayo (10.13%) and Chimbote (10.04%) stand out. In the jungle, Puerto Maldonado with 11.16%; and, on the coast, Moquegua with 10.33%.

The cities that had a price hike between 9% and 10% They were four. In the jungle, Pucallpa with 9.91% and Moyobamba with 9.67%. In the mountains, Huánuco with 9.83% and Huancayo with 9.46%.

Those that varied between 8% and 9% They were six, of which three are located in the north: Tarapoto with 8.32%, Tumbes with 8.26% and Piura with 8.13%. In the mountains, Cerro de Pasco rose with 8.88%, Huancavelica with 8.22% and Ayacucho with 8.05%.

Finally, they were nine cities where inflation ranged between 6% and 8%. Abancay rose with 7.91%, Trujillo with 7.31% and Ica with 7.27%. In rates less than 7% Four cities in the mountains were found: Cajamarca with 6.99%, Cusco with 6.95%, Arequipa with 6.72% and Puno with 6.14%.

In the jungle, Iquitos was detected with 6.87% and in the Lima Metropolitan coast with 6.43%. With a result below 6%, it was only registered in the city of Tacna with 5.92%.

Price rise by sectors

The CPI weights the country’s inflation level by dividing goods and services into 12 sectors. There were three that obtained the highest price increase during the year 2021.

First is the sector of “Accommodation, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels”, which rose 13.80%. From this sector, were the fuel prices those that presented the highest increase with 46.09%.

Likewise, the INEI indicated that the increases in fuels for the home stand out, such as the case of domestic propane gas, which rose 50.5%. This increase in the price of fuels was due to a sustained increase throughout the year of international price of crude oil, exchange rate and freight.

Natural gas per network for housing increased 27%, wood charcoal 18.4% and firewood 6.8%. On the other hand, the rates of residential drinking water increased 10.6%.

The INEI reported that this increase in portable water occurred in 19 cities. It also happened with the rates of residential electric power (which were readjusted in all cities) and, on average, rose 9.9%.

In second place, the “Transport” sector was the one that registered the greatest variation with 10.45%. The INEI explains that this is due to the rise in the international price of oil.

The increase in vehicle fuels was 44.9%, such as vehicle liquefied petroleum gas which rose 77.7%, diesel oil 43.7% and gasoline 45.1%. To a lesser extent, the price of vehicular natural gas increased with 4.2%.

In addition, in passenger transport by air, prices increased by 37.7%, as well as international airfare, which rose 38.2% and domestic airfare by 37.2%. Likewise, interprovincial and local water transport had an increase of 21.5%. It should be noted that the price of motorboats also increased by 29.8% and motorboats by 6%.

In third place, the sector with the greatest variation in prices at the national level was that of “Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages”, which grew 10,4%. The category of oils and fats is the one with the highest increase with 49.9%; in second place, there are tubers and roots with 15.94% and, in third place, Meats and preparations with 14.96%.
