Mango producers criticize Minister Ángelo Manero: “We do not deserve to represent us”

The mango oversupply was one of the main problems that farmers faced at the beginning of the year. In Piura and Lambayeque, tons of this fruit were thrown to the Panamericana Norte and protests were carried out to demand immediate solutions to the government. However, the responses of the head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development, Ángel Manero, generated a series of questions.

Its invocation to local producers not to sow mangoes for three more years was the demonstration of a lack of knowledge, according to Diego Enriquez, representative of this sector in Lambayeque, successful. Because of this unfortunate statement by Minister Manero, he said that farmers do not feel represented by him.

“That the minister apologizes because he has suddenly reconsidered, but it was an automatic issue that came out of the soul to tell him, he is qualifying. In the first impression he gave me laugh because I said he does not know about the subject. We do not deserve to represent us a type of such a scarce knowledge in his wallet,” he emphasized.

Despite the measures taken by the Lambayeque Regional Government To carry out exhibitions and some isolated initiatives of local municipalities, between 80% and 85% of the volume of the estimated production in 1,200 tons has been lost. According to Enriquez, the rulers rarely arrive in the field and if they do, it is only for “the photo.”

To the question against the statements of Manero, the National Agro Convention (Conveagro), which considered that his proposal lacked technical support and was not endorsed by statistical data, taking into account that the problem of the mango oversupply was due to weather factors and a market contraction.

Insufficient credits for farmers

While Agrobarco announced new refinancing and facilities programs with flexible deadlines for Lambayeque mango producers, Enriquez said that small credits have only materialized at the individual level and denounced that there is a harassment by Agrobarco to “see if farmers have some money.”

Regarding the increase in fruit fly that causes serious damage to mango crops, he argued that the National Agricultural Health Service of Peru (Senasa) It must address the problem with immediacy, because producers are not in a position to face it for their economic problems.

“In November, Senasa reactivates the” Program of the Found against the Fly “and the presence of this insect to a minimum had been reduced. But, inexplicably, they withdraw that program in November. Practically, they put our campaign at risk. It is over, and now the farmers are waiting for the solution of the credits problem, taking into account that the next campaign will start,” he said.
