Tacna farmers join forces to export oranges to Chile

The orange producers of the La Yarada-Los Palos border district joined forces to boost the entry of your product to the Chilean market. This initiative was born after the farmers participated in the so-called field schools of the National Service for Agri-food Health and Quality (Senasa).

In Tacna, 1,053 small producers participated in 50 field schools that were developed in communities in the provinces of Tacna, Candarave, Tarata and Jorge Basadre this year. With what they have learned, they seek to improve their cultivation techniques.

The facilitator of the Regional Agency for the Promotion of Innovation and Development, Naliana Rojas Claros, pointed out that they finance market studies and pest risks of orange crops, which is a requirement for Tacna to be included in the citrus export plan of Peru and Chile.

To export to Chile, Tacna needs to be included in that plan, in which for now only Ica and Lima appear. Senasa and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG Chile), work together the list of products that meet the export requirements.

In April, a technical table was installed to address the export of oranges. It is made up of the Directorate of Agriculture, the district municipality of La Yarada Los Palos, the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation, among others.

If successful in meeting all the requirements, farmers in Tacna could begin exporting in 2023, with more than three thousand kilos of production per hectare.

Rojas stressed that thanks to the field school, and the increase in its production, farmers from Tacna were motivated to certify their crops with good agricultural practices and start the path to export.
