Midagri on transgenic law: “There are no conditions to approve it, but we have to support it”

The alert of agrarian guilds regarding the negative implications that the bill would bring to annul Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri). During a visit to Huancavelica, the head of this sector Ángel Manero acknowledged that they support this proposal, but that it is not viable to be approved by Parliament at this time.

“Transparently, there are no conditions to approve a law that allows the cultivation of transgenics In Peru. Votes will not be achieved in the Congress“Manero said on Channel N, after being consulted by a meeting she had with the promoters of this initiative, Alejandro Cavero, Edward Malaga and Adriana Tudela.

The head of the Midagri clarified his position by showing that his sector supports the approach to raise the restriction to the use of transgenics in the country because “the National Institute of Agrarian Research believes that it is appropriate.” However, he said he is “clear that this project is not going to be approved.”

As recalled, through a pronouncement, various agricultural organizations indicated that transgenic seeds threaten biodiversity and food and nutritional security in Peru. These genetically modified living organismsbetter known as OVGM, promote monoculture for industrial uses and serve little for food purposes.

“The use of transgenics compromises the income and feeding of farmers by forcing them to sow a single transgenic plant until finally the agricultural, national or foreign investor chooses to buy the land and replace the labor with modern machinery, adequate to the Place conditions.

They will present project to protect native seeds

After meeting with various congressmen, agricultural organizations enlist the presentation of a bill to protect native seeds from the threat of transgenics. Through this proposal, they seek to guarantee the importance of the traditional seed system in the country and establish provisions for its strengthening, promotion and protection.

“We propose the need for the State to recognize the use of seeds as Peruvian heritage and stop maintaining them in an informal system. In addition, that from the state programs the free exchange and trade of traditional seed systems is encouraged,” said Ángel Villavicencio, coordinator of ‘Cultivating the change’ of Fovida, to this medium.
