Petroperú denounced a new attack against the Norperuano pipeline: 11 attacks in 14 months

The attacks and shots of the Norperuano pipeline infrastructure are a story of never ending. This time, Petroperú reported that on February 8 there was a new criminal act at kilometer 376 of section II of the pipeline, near the community of Numpatkain, located in Santa María de Nieva, province of Condorcanqui (Amazonas).

It is a cut to the duct executed by third parties, who through the use of a mechanical tool, generated a 13 -inch long cleft, approximately. The attack was denounced before the National Police and the Supervisory Agency for Energy and Mining Investment (Osinergmin)who corroborated the incident.

Once the fact was reported, the state company activated a contingency plan, mobilizing specialized personnel and teams to carry out first response work. The actions carried out included the placement of an empernate staple, the installation of containment barriers and the closure of valves in kilometers 406 and 371 of section II, in order to mitigate the possible impacts.

As remembered, the NORPERUANO PUEPS It is under administration of Petroperú. While it is an important asset, there is no oil production in the area and therefore, it does not generate the expected income.

Oefa supervised spill in Norperuano pipeline

Petroperú reported this vandalism to the corresponding entities, such as the OSINERGMIN and the Environmental Evaluation and Control Agency (OEFA). Precisely, this entity carried out supervision actions before the spill of crude oil occurred on February 8.

These tasks will allow to determine the cause of the environmental emergency, as well as the attribution of responsibilities and the evaluation of the impact caused. In addition, a verification of the execution of the initial response measures and the activation of the contingency plan by the Petroperú SA will be carried out

Between January 2023 and March 2024 at least 11 attacks were reported in section II of the Norperuano pipeline. Given this recurring situation, Petroperú invoked the competent authorities to strengthen the security of the ONP, considered national critical active, with the aim of ensuring the proper development of hydrocarbon transport operations.

And it is that 74 of the 89 contingencies registered in the pipeline between 2014-2024 had the origin of third parties, 12 by forces of nature and 2 for accessory failure.
