The holidays are dates established by law in which the working day is suspended throughout the country. These days, of a national, regional or local nature, are aimed at commemorating important historical, religious, cultural or political events. Although workers have the right to rest during these days, there are exceptions in certain sectors that require essential services.

In Peru, national holidays include relevant dates such as the National Festival, as well as days dedicated to religious reflection or celebrations. Some of these holidays can be rescheduled or modified by the Government, and are usually accompanied by various activities organized by public entities and private at the national and local level.

Holidays in Peru in 2025: What days would they be eliminated?

In a project proposed by Congressman Wilson Soto, it would seek to reduce the number of national holidays in the country. The initiative, which would affect thousands of public and private sector workers, raises the elimination of six days of rest. Currently, Peru has 16 national holidays, but if the measure is approved, this number would be reduced to 10.

Likewise, the project also contemplates the review of the holidays established by regional and local governments, which could further modify the labor calendar. The dates that would be eliminated are the following:

• August 30: Santa Rosa de Lima
• October 8: Angamos Combat
• December 9: Battle of Ayacucho

According to Soto, this measure aims “Strengthen productivity” in a challenging economic context for the country. Thus, the aforementioned dates would become commemorative and working both in the public and private sector.
