The fishing production grew 76.76% in December 2024 compared to the similar month of the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). This result implied an accumulated variation of 24.89% and was supported by a greater capture of maritime origin species for indirect human consumption (81.55%).
The extraction of anchovy to make flour and fish oil reached 927,855 tons, 469.7% more than in December 2023, when 162,862 tons were recorded within the framework of the last month of the second season of anchovy fishing. The ports that stood out for registering a greater volume of landing were Chimbote, Malabrigo, Coishco, Carquín and Callao.
However, a reduction in the landing of species destined for direct human consumption (-35.65%) in the four destinations was observed: frozen (-58.1%), canned elaboration (-36.3%), preparation of cure (-35.9%) and consumption in fresh state (-1.9%).
In the case of continental origin, this activity rose in 14.99%supported by the greater extraction of frozen species (47.9%) and consumption in a fresh state (9.4%); while the cure preparation (-47.0%) contracted. As recalled, the PBI fishing sector would have contracted in 19.7% in relation to 2022.
Mining and Hydrocarbons grew in December
The mining and hydrocarbons sector experienced an increase of 1.97% in December 2024, thanks to the growth of metal mining, which reached 2.03%. A significant increase in molybdenum production (32.2%), copper (3.3%), silver (17.9%) and gold (1.0%) was observed. On the other hand, the production of zinc (-25.3%), tin (-23.5%), iron (-1.1%) and lead (-0.5%) evidenced decreases.
For its part, the hydrocarbons subsector grew only 1.47%, driven by an increase in natural gas fluids, which rose by 4.6%. However, the production of natural gas and crude oil registered a 1.5% and 0.2% decrease, respectively.
Electricity generation and cement consumption
Regarding cement consumption, INEI reported that its growth was 0.50% in December, compared to the same month of 2023. This result was explained by the progress of works of private origin and self -construction.
During the last month of 2024, the electricity subsector increased by 2.16%due to the increase in the generation of wind-slope renewable energy (39.3%) and of hydroelectric origin (2.9%). However, the generation of energy of thermoelectric origin decreased 7.7%.
