Buenaventura temporarily suspends its operations in Uchucchacua

The Buenaventura company reported this Friday that it will temporarily suspend mineral exploitation and processing activities at the Uchucchacua Mining Unit, located in Oyón (Lima region).

Through a statement, they specify that this decision is made after evaluating “the difficult situation that has been going through for some time caused by low ore grade, very narrow veins and high operating costs.”

This situation – they add – worsened with the increase in costs during the pandemic and due to a measure of force that the neighboring community of Oyón has maintained for more than a month and that has paralyzed production.

During the suspension period, they will implement a strategy for the period 2021-2023 in order to strengthen exploration in economic zones and increase reserves, redesign the mine to make it more efficient and strengthen relations with the local community. “The objective is to make the Uchucchacua Unit profitable and efficient,” Buenaventura notes.

On the other hand, they maintain that they will continue with essential activities such as water treatment, material collection and progressive closure of mining components.
