Enel changes name after being acquired by a Chinese company: Asian company bought 83% of shares

Enel Distribution will change its name to Plus Energy Peru after being acquired by North Lima Power Grid Holding SAC, a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI). This change was formalized after the purchase of 83.15% of the shares of In it by the Asian company. Pluz Energía Perú SAA will now manage the distribution of energy electricmaintaining continuity in service.

According to information issued to the SSuperintendency of the Securities Market (SMV)the new shareholders’ meeting approved the change of name. There was also a change in the board of directors. This is now led by Yu Wu as president, Yu Xue as vice president; both accompanied by Rafael Llosa Barrios, Hua Yao, Yingpeng Shi, Martín Pérez Monteverde and Jenny Esaine Quijandría.

Enel Peru: why will it change its name?

Indecopi, the authority that oversees competition in our country, has given the green light to the acquisition of Enel Distribución Perú and Enel X Perú by China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI). This operation, announced in April 2023, involved the sale of Enel’s electricity distribution and technology assets in Peru to CSGI.

Indecopi’s approval was subject to certain regulatory conditions that CSGI must meet to ensure competition in the electricity distribution market in Peru. This includes maintaining accounting and functional separation between the different distribution companies.

CSGI: What is the Chinese company that acquired Enel?

China Southern Power Grid International (CSGI) is one of the largest energy companies in Chinawith experience in electricity distribution and transmission. Founded in 2002, CSGI operates mainly in southern China, supplying electricity to more than 250 million people. As a reminder, the company had already requested Indecopi to buy the company for a value of 2.9 billion dollars in April 2023.

This purchase allowed CSGI to expand its presence in the Latin American market, taking advantage of its experience in ultra-high voltage electrical transmission technologies. Beyond Peru, CSG has also made international investments in other countries, such as agreements with the company MingYang for joint projects in renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions. With the purchase of 100% of the shares of Enel X Peru SAC and 83.15% of Enel Distribution Peru SAAthe company will consolidate itself as one of the main electricity distributors in the country.

What other electricity companies exist in Peru?

In Peru, in addition to Pluz Energía Perú, there are other electricity distribution companies that operate in various regions of the country:

  1. Southern Light: one of the main energy distributors in Lima and some nearby provinces.
  2. Electro South East: serves several regions in the south of the country, including Cusco, Apurímac and Madre de Dios.
  3. Hydrandine: Operating in the northern region, this company covers areas such as La Libertad, Ancash and part of Cajamarca.
  4. Electrocentre: distributes electricity in the central part of the country, covering Junín, Huancavelica and Pasco.
