The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, assured this Wednesday, July 17, that the Peruvian GDP will exceed the 3.1% rate estimated by his portfolio for 2024.

“We agree with the Central Reserve Bank, but, particularly internally, we are confident that this growth will be a few points higher,” mentioned TV Peru.

A few days ago, at the InPeru event, the head of the MEF acknowledged that the estimated rate would be 3.2% —that is, an additional ten basis points— but now he is aiming for an increase of more than 3%.

Arista argued that the 5.04% year-on-year GDP growth in May is the second highest in the last three years and was not expected by private economic agents.

“In May, I was pleasantly surprised by the growth in all sectors, except for the financial sector, which fell.”the official noted; however, as La República pointed out, according to economist Juan Carlos Odar, without fishing the rate of change would have been only 2.56%.

According to Odar, the rebound is also concentrated in the agricultural and construction sectors – which fell 6.18% and 11.04% last year, respectively – but we do not see a genuine recovery of the economy since employment is not picking up and business expectations are not improving.
