Peruvian domestic workers denounce lack of labor protection 4 years after the law was enacted

The National Federation of Domestic Workers of Peru – FENTTRAHOP announced its participation in the “National Civic and Popular Strike”, organized on July 19 by the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP).

According to the statement, domestic workers are currently “terribly affected” despite the enactment in 2020 of Law 31047, the law on domestic workers with full rights.

The union denounced that, at present, progress in the implementation of the norm is slow, “because there is ignorance, lack of guidance and discrimination on the part of bad employers,” a problem that is not being addressed by the Government to promote formalization and oversight.

“As citizens and part of the working class, we are outraged by the corruption, impunity and convenience of the government of Dina Boluarte and Congress. The authorities, far from addressing the demands of workers, turn their backs on them, such as keeping the minimum wage frozen, outsourcing and the lack of protection for labor rights,” the organization said.

Domestic workers complained of low wages, overwork, eight-hour shifts and “bad employers who make them work extra for little pay.”

This is without domestic workers being given a written contract, or being granted insurance, bonus payments, Compensation for Time of Service (CTS), or full vacations, as they are now entitled to by law.

“Domestic workers, organized in FENTTRAHOP, will carry out an act that reflects our care work: washing, cleaning, removing dirt: we will wash Peruvian flags as a rejection of the dictatorial government of Dina Boluarte and the corrupt Congress,” the document concludes.
