Economy grew 5.04% in May, driven by fishing

The national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) recorded a year-on-year growth of 5.04% in May compared to the same month in 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the technical report National Production. This result was mainly driven by fishing, a sector that increased by 329.16%.

Also notable during May were the manufacturing (+18.59%), transport, storage, mail and courier (+7.03%), construction (+5.54%), trade (+2.06%) and other services (3.88%) sectors, which together accounted for 81% of the overall result for the month of analysis.

In addition, During the first five months of the year, the country’s productive activity grew by 2.94% and in the last twelve months (June 2023-May 2024) it showed a variation of 0.83%.

On the other hand, the seasonally adjusted index of national production in May registered a variation of 0.10% compared to the previous month.

Fishing production triples in May

The fishing sector grew by 329.16%, according to the INEI. This is due to the increased extraction of species of marine origin (451.16%), for indirect human consumption, such as anchovy for fishmeal and fish oil. Thus, 1,454,863 tons were recorded in the month of analysis, which, compared to the 7,620 tons obtained in the same period last year, showed an increase of 1,447,243 tons, as part of the continuation of the 1st Fishing Season in the North-Central Zone of the country’s coast.
