More than 5 million people in the tourism sector would have lost their jobs between 2020 and 2021

The loss of employment in the tourism sector would have exceeded five million nationally between 2020 and 2021. The figure includes travel agents, official tourism guides, artisans, operators, tourist transport, airlines, restaurants and suppliers, according to the Peruvian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Apavit).

“We must bear in mind that our public sector is a great generator of direct and indirect jobs. Likewise, we must consider that the informality as a result of the pandemic and the scarce supervision has metastasized in our country, calculating that today it is above 80%, affecting formal companies, ”says Ricardo Acosta, Apavit president.

Along these lines, Acosta indicates that the regions are increasingly affected and unemployment continues to increase due to informality. “60% of travel agencies were affected and after more than 20 months of inactivity they were forced to return premises, send their collaborators to perfect suspension,” he added.

Finally, the head of Apavit said that the 75% drop in tourism in 2021 is due to the slow reactivation of the sector and the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, he comments that “the capacity of the Jorge Chávez international airport should be made more flexible because this is a great impediment to the implementation of more air frequencies since it limits the arrival of a greater number of tourists.”
