The international demand for kiwicha showed great performance in the first four months of 2024. According to the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam), exports grew by 95% in value and 115% in volume, compared to the same period last year.
“In the foreign market, Andean grains reach more than 14 markets because they are in demand for their nutritional qualities, given that they contain a significant level of proteins, fats, starch and essential amino acids,” said Óscar Quiñones, head of Idexcam.
Along these lines, between January and April, The United States is the main destination for these exports, accounting for 32% of shipments.. 133 tons were exported to that country for a value of US$287,868, showing an increase of 265% in volume and 184% in value. Japan and Canada followed with a share of 27.10% and 15.71%, respectively; Argentina (5.44%), Italy (4.07%), Brazil (3.13%) and Bulgaria (2.87%).
On the other hand, quinoa and purple corn also had a significant growth. From January to April of this year, quinoa exports registered a positive variation of 45% in value and 20% in volume with US$35 million and 13,859 tons. Meanwhile, purple corn exports registered a growth of 41% (US$816,326) in value and 36% in volume (335 tons) in the same period.
As in the case of kiwicha, the United States was one of the main buyers of these Andean grains,having a share of 47.52% of the total exported in the case of quinoa and 64.78% in purple corn. For the first, 6,000 tons were shipped for US$16.6 million and for the second, 170 tons for US$528,951.
