Up to almost 50% more: these are the basic basket foods that increased in price in June, according to INEI

Monthly inflation in Metropolitan Lima increased by 0.12% in June of this year and its annual variation was 2.29%, according to a recent report by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). These results were influenced by the variation in prices observed in the consumer divisions, Miscellaneous Goods and Services with 0.27%, Restaurants and Hotels 0.20%, Transportation 0.18% and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages 0.11%.

The report from the entity also noted that of the 586 products in the basic family basket, 265 increased their price, 141 decreased and only 180 maintained their same levels, compared to the months of April and May of this year. Along these lines, corn, tuna and yellow potatoes are some of the foods that experienced a notable increase in the last month.

INEI: Which foods have increased in price in June?

According to figures reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), inflation in Metropolitan Lima rose by 0.12% in June, reaching 2.29% and breaking the trend of constant decline that it had been showing since March. Despite this increase, it is still within the target range of between 2% and 3%, established by the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).

INEI reports show that of the 586 products that make up the family basket, 265 experienced an increase in price, 141 decreased and 180 remained at their levels. In this regard, the entity released the following list of foods that registered the greatest increase in cost during June, compared to the months of April and May of this year:

  • Corn: +49.32%
  • Beautiful: +16.58%
  • Horse mackerel: +14.38%
  • Ground garlic: +13.13%
  • Cauliflower: +11.62%
  • Regular apple: +10.08%
  • Yellow potato: +7.84%

Which products saw their prices drop in June via INEI?

The INEI technical report also shows the products that registered falling prices during the month of June:

  • Celery: -14.87%
  • Green pea: -11.24%
  • Hake: -9.48%
  • Pore: -8.10%
  • Strawberry: -8.07%
  • Passion fruit: -7.46%
  • Cucumber: -5.82%
  • Papaya: -5.47%

It is worth mentioning that among the non-edible products that affected the Consumer Price Index, there are domestic airfare, which had a variation of 11.87%, with an incidence of 0.018, and diesel, a variation of -2.62%, with an incidence of -0.020.

Other indicators

In June, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) at the national level registered a variation of 0.07% and in the accumulated figure for the first six months it reached 1.30%. Thus, inflation in the last 12 months stood at 1.89%.

Furthermore, of the 26 cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated, the highest variations were in the following:

  • Cusco: +0.36%
  • Huancayo and Moquegua: +0.18%
  • Tarapoto: +0.17%
  • Puno: +0.16%
  • Moyobamba +0.15%

On the other hand, 15 cities reported falling prices. These are the main ones listed below:

  • Pucallpa: -0.48%
  • Abancay: -0.44%
  • Iquitos: -0.31%
  • Piura: -0.30%

What is inflation?

According to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), inflation is a generalized and continuous increase in prices, which is equivalent to the devaluation of the currency with negative consequences on economic activity and the well-being of the population. On the contrary, when a generalized and continuous fall in prices is observed, we are facing deflation.
