Railways will facilitate intermodal integration between regions, according to the head of the MTC, Raúl Pérez-Reyes.
China is Peru’s main trading partner and the government of Dina Boluarte is seeking to further strengthen ties between the two nations by promoting a portfolio of railway projects worth US$31 billion.
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Raúl Pérez-Reyes, invited Xi Jinping’s government and businessmen from the Asian giant to invest in this multimodal transportation project that will optimize the transfer of passengers and products.
What are the new railways?
The MTC prepares the profile studies of the new railways Lima – Ica, Puerto San Juan de Marcona – Andahuaylas and Lima – Barrancawhich would require an investment greater than US$21,000 million.
These projects could be carried out under the government-to-government (G2G) contract modality —the minister noted— and, as La República previously reported, the commuter trains from Lima to Ica and Barranca would not be ready until 2031.
Railways are also on the list. Lambayeque – Cajamarca, Trujillo – Barranca and Hydroelectric – Quillabambawhich are in the idea stage, with an estimated investment of US$10 billion.
“We are at a key moment in our relationship with China, with new investment opportunities in mining, infrastructure and digitalization. Let us continue working together to strengthen these ties and build a prosperous future,” Pérez-Reyes noted from Shanghai.
The official also discussed the Marcona Port project (Nazca, Ica), whose investment exceeds US$400 million and its concession is scheduled for 30 years.
Additionally, he met with representatives of China Railway Construction Corporation Investments and with the president of Cosco Shipping Corporation Limited, Wan Min, to refine details for the inauguration of the Chancay Megaport set for November of this year.
