Fixed Internet: there are more than 800,000 new fiber optic connections

According to the Private Investment Supervisory Agency in Telecommunications (Osiptel), 851,228 new fiber optic connections were registered in the first quarter of this year. That is, 37% more than the same period in 2023, when there were 1,414,342. Currently, of the 3,656,127 fixed internet connections, 2,265,570 are already fiber optic, thus representing 62% of the total.

Along these lines, the proportion of users who indicate that they are totally satisfied with their fixed internet service has also increased, going from 34% in 2022 to 53% in 2023., according to the latest study on the level of telecommunications user satisfaction, by Osiptel. In this service, Win was positioned with 83%, followed by Movistar with 53% and Claro with 44%.

Rafael Muente, executive president of the supervisory body, highlights that Win’s entry into the market and its strengthening is encouraging other competitors to quickly invest in technologies that provide greater satisfaction to users, thus replacing copper with fiber optics.

“In 2023, the growth of fiber optics in Peru has been the second fastest accelerating in the world, after Germany. Although Win has taken a significant share of the market in a short time, that is not enough to raise the percentage nationally. What we are actually observing is a general improvement in all operators due to the growth of fiber optics in the market,” says Muente.

In that sense, the stability, speed and symmetry in both downloading and uploading data that fiber optics allows is improving user satisfaction rates and increasing the competitive capacity of the different operators at the level of technology and quality.

WOW leads in regions

41% of the fiber optic internet market presence in the regions of Peru belongs to the Peruvian company WOWwhich in just four years of operations has gained more than 450,000 clients in 23 regions.

The operator had a clear regional focus from the beginning, developing the first fiber optic internet coverage in the province of Nazca, Ica region, where they have more than 83,000 customers and lead with a strong 73% market share.
