IATA warns of harm to passengers with the increase in airport fees

The situation facing the airline industry in Peru along with the future opening of the new terminal at the Jorge Chávez International Airport puts the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Association of Transport Companies on alert. International Airport (AETAI), who have expressed their concern for passengers and the way in which they will be affected by the increase in airport fees.

“It is counterproductive that Lima Airport Partners has selected a date so close (December 18, 2024) to the high season of the Christmas holidays to begin operations in the new Lima airport terminal, since this entails special sensitivity for passengers. Managing such high demand in a new operating environment is truly risky, even though airlines want to provide the best experience.”, commented Carlos Gutiérrez, General Manager of AETAI.

Along these lines, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Transport and Communications and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism met together with the airline unions. And a few months before the expected start of operations of the new Jorge Chávez terminal, the corresponding authorities are once again requested to prioritize air transport as a State policy, focusing in particular on this operation and how to stop the potential increase in flights. airport fees to avoid harm to users.

It is expected that this could worsen starting in 2027, when, according to the economic model of the contract, the nearly US$2 billion recently invested by LAP will be transferred to the rates for airport services that passengers and airlines will pay. Even the entry into operation of the new airport in 2024 could generate an additional increase in rates.

Commercial aviation in Peru is 4.9% less in connectivity compared to 2019

It is important to keep in mind that, unlike most Latin American countries, commercial aviation in Peru has not yet recovered from the crisis that began with the pandemic. Likewise, social and political conflicts continued, finding itself at -4.9% compared to the level of connectivity it had in 2019. Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Mexico have even surpassed their previous figures.

Due to the above, The percentage of remuneration delivered to the State, which is equivalent to 46.511% of the total gross income received by LAP, must be reconsidered for the benefit of users.as well as a new analysis of the economic-financial balance of the concession, as a legal prerequisite for the addendum to validly proceed.

Likewise, the unjustified power granted to LAP in 2015 to charge an airport use fee to passengers in transit who will connect at the AIJCH to their final destination must be reversed, since, in addition to increasing prices for travelers , will reduce the airport’s competitiveness, since it does not apply to any other hub in the region such as El Dorado in Bogotá or Tocumen in Panama City.
