Cusco: tourist arrivals in the first quarter increase 76.2%

The imperial city registered the arrival of 428,782 visitors at the end of the first quarter. 70.8% of visitors to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu were foreigners and 29.2% were nationals.

Tourism has been demonstrating significant levels of recovery in Cusco and this is evidenced by the arrival of tourists at the Velasco Astete International Airport. Along these lines, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Elizabeth Galdo, pointed out that the arrival of visitors increased by 76.2% at the end of the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2023, with 428,782 passengers registering.

It is key to note that In 2023, the Velasco Astete International Airport registered the arrival of 1 million 498,953 passengers5.4% higher than what was registered in 2022.

“This greater arrival is reflected in a growth in visits to the most emblematic tourist sites in Cusco. Thus, the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, between January and March, received 120,780 visitors, which translated into an increase of 67% (additional flow of 48,000) compared to the same months of 2023. 70.8% of visitors to the Historical Sanctuary were foreigners and 29.2% were national visitors,” indicated the head of Mincetur.

Regarding visits to the Sacsayhuamán Esplanade, between January and April 2024, 234,073 people were received, an additional flow of 131,000 compared to the same period last yearwith an increase of 127% in the number of tourists.

These figures demonstrate the boost of incoming and internal tourism at the national level, and tourism also generates jobs and allows economic reactivation for the regions of Peru.
