The Chancay megaport, without a doubt, is positioned as one of the most important projects in recent years in Peru. From the moment of its announcement, it has projected not only million-dollar profits, but also a significant impact on the development, modernization of the entire area and a wide range of additional benefits. The magnitude of this project promises to transform not only the port infrastructure, but also the economic and social landscape of the region, opening new opportunities and horizons for growth and prosperity.

Along these lines, due to its large investment, this new port will develop modern technologies brought from China. In this note you will learn more details about this implementation that is soon to be inaugurated.

Chancay megaport: what technologies will be implemented?

With an investment of more than 260 million dollars, this port will implement cutting-edge technology, estimated to be 20% of the total amount of the entire million-dollar investment. These technologies will be:

  • Implementation of 5G technology: The implementation of 5G technology will bring significant improvements in bandwidth, allowing the interconnection of port equipment such as cranes and intelligent unmanned vehicles. This advanced network will ensure more efficient and coordinated operation by connecting all equipment to the Terminal Operations System (TOS). With this innovation, new possibilities will open for process optimization and improvement in port logistics, providing greater responsiveness and adaptability to market demands.
  • Crane automation: Automated cranes, in the near future, will have the ability to move autonomously to specific destinations to carry out various transactions, whether receiving a carrier or delivering merchandise to a truck. Likewise, autonomous vehicles will be responsible for transporting cargo from the dock to the container area, which will result in a reduction in operation times and an improvement in the precision of logistics operations.
  • Facial recognition implementation: It will have an OCR camera system with facial recognition which will allow the carriers to be identified, facilitating exit and entry to the port, and will also ensure security through verification.
  • Renewable energy: The dock and yard gantry cranes will be 100% electric, which represents an important advance in reducing emissions and promoting the port’s environmental sustainability. This measure is part of a broader initiative that seeks to promote the use of renewable energy and reduce the environmental impact of port operations.

The manager of Cosco Shipping, Carlos Ortiz, told Gestión that the technology will be brought from China, highlighting that the model of the ports of Tianjin and Shanghai will be followed. “China will export technology to the port of Chancay.”

Port of Chancay received the first batch of gantry cranes

The Chancay Megaport recently received the first batch of five gantry cranes from China, crucial equipment for the launch of the port’s first phase of operations. The arrival of these cranes was witnessed by local authorities and representatives of Cosco Shipping Port, the company in charge of the development of this important infrastructure. This milestone marks a significant step in the advancement of the project and promises to boost port development in the region.

When will the Port of Chancay be inaugurated?

The official opening of the Chancay Megaport, scheduled for November 2024, marking a crucial milestone in the Peruvian maritime trade landscape. Expected to become operational by 2025, this port will handle a considerable volume of cargo, which will undoubtedly boost efficiency in the country’s commercial operations and contribute significantly to national economic growth.
