In our country, 54% of the population declares that they have incorporated digital payment operations, according to the 13th report by Minsait Payments. It is notable that the use of digital wallets such as Yape and Plin is constantly growing, both for business and personal transactions. However, this modality is not free from cybercrime.
A recent ATV report showed how these thieves operate through social networks such as Telegram. They offer a false application that looks very similar to the BCP and BBVA apps to deceive merchants, making them believe that the corresponding deposit was made for purchasing a product, but this is not the case.
They sell fake Yape and Plin application to scam merchants
The ATV program “It Happens Now” exposed a type of scam that uses cybercrime to commit its misdeeds. It turns out that the reporters of this program bought a fake application of the Yape and Plin digital wallets for S/60 through Telegram. Once they received the download link and user number and password, they could use this app.
This digital tool looks very similar to digital payment methods, making it difficult for its victims to identify. It allows you to enter telephone numbers to make transfers and detects the seller’s first and last names. When the merchant receives a notification from Yape, he believes he has received confirmation of the transaction, but in reality, his account remains the same.
“Indeed, that is my name. I see the same screen of the original Yape and it couldn’t make a difference,” said a victim of cybercriminals, who when selling the application, ensure that payment for the fake Yape application is made through a digital POS to avoid scams.
According to lawyer Erick Iriarte, this type of computer fraud can be punished with a prison sentence of no less than 4 nor more than 8 years. Furthermore, the cybersecurity specialist adds that these actions respond to a gang or a group that has several levels. “Someone who makes the software, someone who distributes it, and someone who uses it,” he explained.
Yape and Plin: how to recognize a fake transaction?
To avoid being surprised by this type of scam, the banks that manage Yape and Plin recommend the following to their users:
- Merchants should ask their customers to use the QR code before sharing the mobile number on which the payment will be made.
- After each transaction, you must review the notifications sent by the application and the balance of your electronic wallet accounts.
- Users can access the movement list in the app and ensure that the deposit appears with the correct details.
- It is worth remembering that any deposit must be reflected immediately in the application. It is not advisable to only look at screenshots or confirmation messages.
How to differentiate an original Yape from a fraudulent one?
Identifying an authentic Yape from a fraudulent one can be difficult, but there are certain signs that can help you detect fraud. First of all, it is essential to download Yape only from official sources, such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store app stores. Avoid installing applications from links shared on social networks or untrustworthy websites.
Also, always verify the details of the transactions carried out. An authentic Yape receipt will contain accurate and verifiable information, such as the name of the sender and recipient, the date and time of the transaction, and a unique verification code. If you receive a receipt that seems suspicious, compare it with previous ones to detect possible inconsistencies.
Another precautionary measure is to use secure payment methods, such as QR code, instead of sharing your phone number. This practice reduces the risk of your data being used fraudulently. If at any time you suspect possible fraud, report the situation to the corresponding authorities and the financial entity responsible for Yape.
