Thus, in the last edition of the Copa América 2021, an increase of 34% was identified in the total sales volume in the food, entertainment, fashion and department store sectors during the dates in which the national team was playing, according to Niubiz .
In addition, during the Copa América 2021 matches, Peruvians showed a significant increase in their expenses in different categories, a month prior to the match. In that line, Department stores had an increase of 52% and the fashion category also increased by 36% due to the purchase of t-shirts.
Likewise, the food sector had an average increase of 29% in sales volume and the entertainment sector had a growth of 25%. Reflecting how enthusiasm for football influences consumer purchasing habits.
“These data reflect the profound impact that sporting events have on people’s consumer behavior. Not only does spending increase in sectors related to food and entertainment, but we also observe a significant change in urban mobility,” commented Emigdio Campos, Business Analytics Manager at Niubiz.
And the football fervor has also affected behavior related to mobility. It was recorded that, hours before the national team’s matches in the 2021 Copa América, the transportation sector experienced a 10% decrease in its sales volume, since consumers preferred not to move so as not to miss any moment of the game. However, after the games ended, a 30% growth was recorded in the taxi service, evidencing the rush to go out to celebrate or return home.
On the other hand, there was also a 31% growth in the total number of transactions, with an improvement in the average ticket that reached S/28. “It is interesting to see how the enthusiasm for football not only unites people in terms of sporting spirit, but also translates into economic dynamism in various sectors,” added Campos.
