MTC: Peruvians will be able to make calls from Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador at no additional cost

From January 1, 2022, Peruvians on postpaid rate plans will be able to make calls, send text messages and use their data package from Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador, with the same line number and without any additional charge, reported the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC).

The benefit for the member countries of the Andean Community is part of the standard approved on February 19, 2020. On that occasion, the MTC and the regulatory body (Osiptel) maintained a technical and coordinated work of months of negotiation with the other countries .

“It is good news to start the new year, as it will allow the brother countries of the Andean Community to unite more so that their citizens can use their lines without surcharges when they arrive in any of the four nations,” said Juan Silva, head of the minister. of Transport and Communications.

It should be remembered that international roaming service providers may not, under any circumstances, condition or charge additional charges or retail rates other than those established for the use of this service.

This is in addition to the fact that roaming is only activated if the user requests it in advance and expressly to their provider. “The MTC promotes measures to sustain the needs of the new digital economy and the international mobility of the end users of the mobile telecommunications service,” added Silva.

For his part, Jorge Hernando Pedraza, general secretary of the Andean Community, pointed out that the measure will benefit the more than 111 million inhabitants of the region. “It will contribute to effectively and efficiently closing the digital divide, but above all it will strengthen the Andean Digital Agenda,” he added.

It should be noted that at the 173 Extraordinary Meeting of the Andean Committee of Telecommunications Authorities (CAATEL), with the participation of the MTC as the governing body of telecommunications in Peru, a favorable opinion was issued on the proposal made within it, regarding the new tariff scheme wholesaler indicated in the second transitory provision of Decision 854.
