The promotion and facilitation of maritime transport in cabotage traffic of passengers and cargo will make Peruvian foreign trade more competitive, according to Adex.
The new maritime cabotage law approved in Congress will position Peru as a regional hub and will facilitate the connection of the interoceanic corridors (IIRSA South and North), thus promoting the growth of Arequipa, Cusco and Piura, said Julio Pérez Alván, president of the Association of Exporters (Adex).
“Now regional ports will be able to capture greater volumes of cargo and Peruvian products will be prevented from moving to the port terminals of neighboring nations. “Our country will have national and foreign vessels that will offer internal maritime cargo transportation services, positively impacting companies that serve the domestic market, importers and exporters, especially micro, small and medium-sized companies,” he noted.
Likewise, the president of the business union highlighted that in a context in which the countries of the world seek to reduce their logistics costs to make their foreign trade more competitive, the parliament’s decision is very welcome news for the sector.
It is important to highlight that cabotage will not only reduce transportation costs, but will also strengthen the national economy, ensuring the sovereignty of our maritime routes. Along these lines, new avenues will be opened for trade and investment in the maritime sector.
