an artifact common in the kitchen of many Peruvian homes could be significantly inflating electricity bills. That is why the Trade Association of International Electrical Products Companies of Peru (EPEI-Peru) suggests rationalizing the use of household appliances and appliances with higher consumption at home, prioritizing their use during the off-peak time established by the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

What is the appliance that consumes the most electricity in the kitchen?

We are talking about induction cookers, also called electric cookers. The popularity of induction cooktops has grown in recent years due to their ability to heat quickly and evenly. However, this benefit comes with a hidden cost: increased energy consumption.

According to recent data, an induction cooker can consume up to 2.2 kWh per hour, which exceeds the consumption of other large appliances. This difference translates into an increase in the electricity bill that could be avoided with the efficient use of this appliance.

Tips to reduce energy consumption in the kitchen

To prevent induction hobs from increasing your electricity bill too much, it is essential to adopt some energy-saving habits.

  • First, using pots and pans with thick, flat bases can improve heat efficiency.
  • Furthermore, it is advisable to turn off the hob a few minutes before finishing cooking, taking advantage of the residual heat.
  • It is also helpful to opt for appliances with energy efficiency labels and perform regular maintenance to ensure they are working optimally.

Alternatives and solutions for a more efficient home

While induction cooktops are popular and space-saving, there are alternatives that can be more energy efficient. Gas stoves, for example, are a traditional option that can reduce electricity consumption.

Furthermore, glass-ceramic hobs, although less fast, consume less energy compared to induction hobs. Another solution is investing in renewable energy technology, such as solar panels, which can offset the high consumption of household appliances.
