SNMPE: electricity production maintains a firm recovery as of October 2021

The electricity sector continues to recover. The National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE) reported that, in October 2021, the generation increased not only compared to the same month in 2020, but also compared to September 2021.

Through its Monthly Electricity Statistical Bulletin, the SNMPE specified that, in the first ten months of the year, the electricity production of the SEIN accumulated 44,767 GWh, a figure that is 11% higher than that registered in the same period of 2020 and 2 % higher than that obtained in the first ten months of 2019.

In this sense, in October, various companies registered higher electricity generation compared to the same month of 2020. In addition, in the first ten months of the year, companies such as Kallpa and Enel Generación Perú continued to lead the growth of electricity generation compared to the same period of 2020.

The main sources of generation are hydroelectric and thermal (based mainly on natural gas). Together they represented about 96% of the SEIN’s production in October 2021. Hydraulic generation began a growing trend, as a sign of the end of the dry season this year.

“After the entry of the Intipampa and Rubí solar plants (the largest of this type in the country) in 2018, the average monthly solar generation was around 70 GWh,” the SNMPE sent.

Similarly, it happened with the entry of the Wayra I plant (the largest wind power plant in the country) in 2018, as wind power generation reached a monthly average close to 150 GWh in recent months. With the operations of the Huambos and Duna plants since the end of 2020, the upward trend registered in previous months is expected to consolidate, according to the report.

SNMPE: electricity demand grows

The reactivation is also evident in the maximum demand, which has been recovering in recent months. In October of this year, it increased compared to the same month in 2020 and compared to September 2021.

In October, the maximum demand for hydroelectric and wind sources reached 3,680 MW and 338 MW respectively, which represents an increase of 5% for each of them. However, the maximum demand per thermal source was 2,955 MW, which is equivalent to a 2% drop compared to the same month in 2020.
