Mincetur: Peru and Indonesia begin negotiations for a trade agreement

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) announced the start of the first round of negotiations for the Trade Agreement between Peru and Indonesia that will run from today until Thursday, May 30. This is one more step towards the development of better conditions for access to markets, the reduction of trade barriers and the creation of new opportunities for citizens and companies.

“Peru exports a significant number of agricultural products to Indonesia, such as cocoa beans, grapes and fresh pomegranate. As our country is one of the world’s main fruit exporters, this Trade Agreement will create new opportunities so that Indonesian consumers have access to high-quality Peruvian products,” said the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Elizabeth Galdo.

The initial session was chaired by Minister Galdo; the Indonesian ambassador to Peru, Ricky Suhendar; the chief negotiator of Peru, Gerardo Meza; and Indonesia’s chief negotiator, Johni Marta. Likewise, various topics will be addressed; such as market access, cooperation, legal and institutional matters, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, customs procedures and trade facilitation, trade defense and sanitary and phytosanitary measures.

Mineral exports to Indonesia

Peru currently supplies Indonesia with minerals. Only in 2023, the largest exports of zinc (+143.2%) and iron (+US$ 785 million) stood out. Furthermore, that same year, the growth of Peruvian exports to Indonesia was mainly due to the greater sale of natural dyes (+102.9%), pharmaceutical products (+39%) and fish meal (+33%).

On the other hand, it is important to highlight that Indonesia is a market with more than 276 million inhabitants, making it the fourth most populated country in the world, with one of the largest economies in Southeast Asia. Likewise, it represents the fifth most important economy in Asia and for Peru it is the ninth most important trade economy in that region.
