The total number of working Peruvians reached 17,212,800 people in March of this year, according to the INEI. Compared to the same period in 2023, there is a slight drop of 0.6% (107,100 fewer people).
However, the deterioration in the quality of employment continues: of the employed population, 8,270,200 people are unemployed, both due to insufficient hours (visible underemployment) and income (invisible underemployment).
Compared to March of last year, there is a drop of 2.6% (-224,400 people); However, unlike 2019, there are 602,273 Peruvians who were dragged into underemployment (previously, there were 7,667,921).
Thus, the underemployment rate is 45.4%, and in the year before the pandemic it was 42.5%. Approximately, 5 out of every 10 workers nationwide work in precarious conditions.
On the other hand, there are 8,942,600 Peruvians properly employed—who receive the legal benefits—and compared to the pre-pandemic year, the difference is 522,579 fewer people.
