More than 1.9 million Peruvians cannot cover their minimum expenses for food

According to a recent report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), 5.7% of Peruvians are in extreme poverty; That is, around 1.9 million Peruvians cannot cover their basic food basket, “a worrying figure that denotes a situation of food insecurity in thousands of Peruvian families,” said Jessica Huamán, dean of the College of Nutritionists of Lima.

On the other hand, the Monetary Poverty Report shows that poverty has increased in the urban areas of our country, going from 9.8% to 16.2% and, along the same lines, some types of malnutrition have shown the same behavior.

“For example, Chronic malnutrition has increased from 7.1% to 8.1% in children under 5 years of age in urban areas, while childhood anemia has also increased from 39% to 40.2% in children aged 6 to 35 months. of age in urban areasadding to this the concern that monetary poverty is concentrating on 43.3% of children under 6 years of age,” Huamán emphasized.

Likewise, there are other equally worrying figures related to the lack of access to basic services, something that, according to the specialist, would mean greater vulnerability to achieving adequate nutrition.

In Peru, 73.7% of the population does not have safely managed water servicewhile 45.7% use polluting solid fuels for cooking, mostly firewood.

“These data show us the precarious situation in which the poorest population of our country finds itself, putting their health at risk, since, for example, if they do not have access to safe water, this could influence the development of diseases. acute diarrhea, which would trigger malnutrition in the child,” highlighted the specialist.
