The INEI reported this Thursday that 29% of Peruvians were affected by poverty during 2023: 1.5% more than in 2022 (27.5%) and 8.8%, than in 2019 —when the rate was 20.2%—.
If the expected 3% annual growth in GDP is prolonged until 2028, according to former Minister of Economy David Tuesta, it will take more than 20 years to reduce poverty to the pre-pandemic level: in 2046 (see graph).
Projection of reduction of the poverty rate according to the annual GDP of Peru.
Tuesta maintains for La República that the 3% projection for the Peruvian economy is very limited and is increasingly moving away from its potential.
In the middle of last year, the Private Competitiveness Council – chaired by Tuesta – warned that if 2% growth is prolonged, poverty would not reach 20% until 2053.
And, if an annual rate of 4% is achieved, poverty would return to 20% in 16 years.
According to the CPC, to reach the poverty rate of 10%, like Chile, the path of 6% annual variation in GDP would have to be recovered and would not be achieved until 2054.
