At the end of 2023, 29% of Peruvians are poor, according to official data from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) to which La República was able to access.

Considering that in 2022 the monetary poverty ratio was 27.5%, during the first year of Dina Boluarte’s management there was an increase of one and a half percentage points. Thus, it is estimated that 9,780,540 Peruvians ended 2023 in a situation of poverty, not being able to have sufficient income to cover the basic consumer basket.

As this newspaper reported, the increase in extreme rural poverty is one of the most critical points of the report that President Boluarte would have tried to censor. According to the INEI, the universe of extreme rural poor grew from 14.6% to 16.2%.
