The Chancay megaport: what does the project consist of?
The Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal is a project located in the district of the same name, in the province of Huaral, Lima region. It is built by the Chinese company Cosco Shipping Ports Chancay Peru (CSPCP) in coordination with the MTC.
The Chancay megaport will be equipped to receive the largest cargo ships in the world, that is, those with a capacity greater than 18,000 containers. The construction of this ambitious project included the demolition of a hill and the excavation of a 1.8 kilometer tunnel, which will provide a direct connection with the Pan-American North Highway.
This complex development is made up of three fundamental parts. The first is the port operational zone, intended for essential port activities. The second part includes the access complexwhich includes the vehicular port, entry gates, an area for customs inspections, administrative offices and logistics and support services areas. The third and last part is the tunnel, which plays a crucial role in the megaport infrastructure.
Chancay Megaport: exclusivity of services
At the beginning of the year, The Port Authority requested to annul the exclusivity granted to Cosco Shipping in the Chancay Megaport. This problem between the authority and the Chinese company in charge of the Chancay Megaport generated concern, not only because of the conclusion of the project, but because of the other investments that the Asian country had planned in Peru.
The National Port Authority (APN) admitted that it does not have the power to grant exclusivity to the Chinese consortium Cosco Shipping Ports in the operation of essential services in the Chancay megaport. Through a statement, the entity indicated that it has initiated a judicial process to correct an “administrative error.” Such a mistake could cost billions of dollars, thousands of lost jobs and the great economic opportunities that this project represents.
