Finally, inflation returned to the target range. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Metropolitan Lima recorded a decline of -0.05% in April and, with this, the annualized progress was 2.42%.

It is the first time that inflation reaches the target range of the Central Reserve Bank (BCRP) in 35 months. The last time was in May 2021, when progress of 2.45% was recorded in the last twelve months. In addition, it is the lowest rate in 36 months since April 2021, when it advanced 2.38%.

According to the report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), the accumulated inflation in the first four months of the year was 1.54%. The negative variation of the CPI at the national level was -0.01%.

It should be noted that both the BCRP and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) expected inflation to return to the target range of between 2% and 3% in the first quarter of 2024, but the projection was not met.

This new update of consumer prices in Metropolitan Lima should also anticipate a new cut in the reference rate, which is currently at 6%.

However, April inflation in the United States (it reached 2.7% in March to the surprise of most analysts) could demand some caution from the largest Peruvian issuing entity.
